Can I rent a car if I’m under 25 years old?
Yes. The minimum age to rent a vehicle with Wausau Wheels is 21.
Can I rent a car and return it to a different location?
No. All rentals must be picked up and returned to our location at 340 S. 4th Street, Wausau.
Do you have a young renter fee?
Yes. There is a $10 fee per day for drivers under the age of 25.
When do I have to pay for the rental?
Because we are an independent rental agency with a small fleet, we require a prepayment equal to 25% of the total rental charges made at the time of reservation. Failure to pre-pay 25% will result in reservation being cancelled. This helps to ensure that customers make a reservation and then don't show to pickup, therefore depriving another customer who may have needed a car from reserving the vehicle. The balance of the rental charges along with the separate $200 security deposit are due upon pick up the vehicle. If you wish to prepay more than 25%, please let us know and we'll send you a payment link.
Your retail store (Wausau Outlet) has limited hours. Can I pickup a vehicle outside those hours?
Yes! If you make an online reservation, we'll make sure we're there for you at your pickup and return times.
Can I just come into your retail store (Wausau Outlet) and pickup a car without a rental reservation?
Yes! You can stop in during our regular store hours (Tues. & Thurs. 11-7, Fri. & Sat. 10-6, Sun. 12-5) and if we have vehicles available, we'll assist you in getting a car.
Is there a limit on how many miles I can put on the vehicle?
Yes. To keep our prices low, our standard rates are limited to 200 miles per day. For example: If you rent for three days, you're allowed 600 total miles. If you go over the allowed miles, you will be charged an additional 25 cents PER MILE over the allowed. 93% of our rental customers average less than 60 miles per day.
We DO offer an unlimited mileage option on our cars for an additional $18 per day. Unlimited mileage along with out of state travel is an option that can be chosen during the online reservation process.
What do I need to rent a car?

INSURANCE: Wausau Wheels, LLC does not provide collision or liability coverage for your rental. We REQUIRE you provide your own (in your name) current and verifiable auto liability insurance that covers you when you rent our vehicle. If there will be more than one driver, BOTH drivers MUST be listed on the policy. To verify insurance, click the "Verify Insurance" button on the bottom of the confirmation email you receive from us after making reservation ‼️IMPORTANT: Failure to verify insurance with 24 hours of making reservation will result in the reservation being canceled and your pament being refunded less our 10% cancelation fee.

A valid credit or debit card in the name of the renter for the charges plus a refundable security deposit.

A valid, unrestricted driver’s license (no probationary, temporary or occupational licenses). Licenses are verified by issuing state. We reserve the right to cancel reservations based on driving history, regardless if a license is valid or not.

‼️Renters with liability insurance but without verifiable collision and comprehensive insurance that transfers to rental cars will be required to purchase the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) at time of rental in order to protect against damage to our vehicle. Do you allow additional drivers?
Yes! We allow additional drivers for a fee. This can be chosen while making the reservation. ‼️NOTE: Any additional drivers MUST be listed on the insurance policy of the primary renter. We verify ALL insurance. If the additional drivers IS NOT listed on the policy, they will not be permitted to drive vehicle as damage to our vehicle would not be covered.
Do you accept cash for rentals?
No. A valid credit or debit card in the renter's name is required to rent a vehicle from us.
Do you require a refundable security deposit?
Yes. Like most rental companies, we require a refundable security deposit. A $200 refundable security deposit is required when picking up your vehicle. It will be refunded upon return of the vehicle after we check it in.
Can I cancel my reservation?
Yes. You will be charged a 25% cancellation fee. If you have prepaid more than 25% of the total rental amount, we will refund you the difference.
What happens if the car gets damaged while in my possession as the renter?
YOU are liable for ANY damage to our vehicle while in possession of it. You will need to contact YOUR insurance company to cover any damage to our car or pay Wausau Wheels directly. If you DO NOT have full coverage insurance that covers rental cars (comprehensive and collision), you will be REQUIRED to purchase the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) offered by RentalCover to cover damage to rental vehicle. Terms Ask us for details. Customers without required insurance coverage or insurance that cannot be verified will not be allowed to rent from us.

How do you handle Illinois tolls?
Our license plates are registered with the Illinois Tollway system. Toll charges will be withheld from your security deposit. NOTE: If vehicle has traveled out of state, it may take up to three weeks for tolls to post from the tollway system. This may delay refund of your security deposit. for up to 3 weeks while we wait for charges from Illinois to post.
